There are four icons near the top of your profile page, right underneath your profile’s name and description. The first is a grid icon which allows you to view your photos in a grid style. The icon next to it, with three horizontal lines, allows you to scroll through your photos one at a time. The next icon, which looks like a teardrop with a circle inside, shows you the locations on a map of where you have posted photos. The final icon, which looks like an anonymous avatar, shows photos of you that have been tagged by other users or photos that you’ve tagged yourself in. If you have more than one linked account you can alternate the homepages by clicking on your handle name on the top of the screen. A drop menu will appear with all logged-in accounts, allowing for easy switch.
Clicking on the middle icon at the bottom of your page (a square with a circle inside) allows you to upload pictures or videos. Once you click on that icon, you will be taken to a new screen that allows you to upload photos from your library, shoot a photo immediately or upload a video. On the library tab, you have the option of switching between iPhoto libraries. Once photo is selected you can zoom in or out by clicking the two arrow, create a “boomerang” by clicking the infinity button, or create a photo grid. By clicking on the photo tab, a blue circle appears. When clicked once, Instagram shoots a photo. The circular arrow allows you to switch the camera, and the lighting bolt in a circle activates/deactivates the flash. The video tab allows you to record videos. Similarly, the circular arrows flip the cameras.
After you have selected a photo, you will be brought to a new page. Right underneath the photo are three different icons. The icon to the far left (circle with 3 lines) allows you to select a filter for your photo. The icon in the middle (looks like a sun) allows you to adjust the shadows and light in your photo. The third icon on the right (looks like a wrench) allows you to edit your photo with professional editing tools..
By clicking the speech bubble with a small heart icon, you will be brought to your activity page for your Instagram feed. There are two tabs on this page, “following” and “you”. The “you” tab allows you to see how people are interacting with your page and you can interact with followers. There are 4 orange notification keys: the heart (new like), avatar (new follow), speech bubble (new comment), and anonymous avatar (tagged photo of you). The “following” tab allows you to see your follower’s most recent follows, likes, or comments.
On the top right hand corner of your newsfeed, there is an icon that looks like a dropbox. By clicking on it, you are redirected to the “direct messaging”. The idea of direct messaging is to chat directly with users or groups. On the main page, you can see existing conversations. If you click on the plus sign, you can start a new chat. When you are on the chat, you can send messages or images. You will be notified of a new direct message by a little orange dot that will appear on top of the dropbox icon on your instagram newsfeed.
When scrolling through your Instagram feed, you can like and comment on other users photos. You will see the option to “Like” or “Comment” in gray boxes. Tap the heart or double-tap the picture to “Like” a photo. Click the speech bubble to be redirected to the commenting page. If you click on the curved arrow you will be able to send the picture through “direct messaging” to other users by typing their handle on the search bar or by clicking on the image of your most recent friends.
If you wish to delete a comment or caption of your own, swipe the comment/caption to the left. You will see a trash can inside of a red box. Click that icon to delete the comment. By clicking on the grey arrow, you can respond to the specific comment.
On top of the photo, right of the instagram handle name, there is a small triangular arrow. Tapping the the arrow will bring you to a drop-down menu. You have different options that are associated with the picture, which include Delete, Edit, and Share.
The search icon on the bottom of your profile page takes you to your search options. The main page shows trending hashtags, explore photos, and popular videos related to popular events in your area. You can also use the search bar at the top of the page to find recent searches, people, tags (hashtags), and places.
On you profile page there is the option to Edit Your Profile. It is located at the top, next to your profile picture. The icon takes you to the Edit Profile page. There you have the option to change different things about your profile. From the top, you have the option to edit the name on the account, profile photo, the Instagram username, the link to website and finally a short bio. It also allows you to change your password and the email associated with the account.
